Portfolio & Admissions Mentorship
University of the Arts London (UAL) Portfolio Preparation
Three routes into UAL
Yuxin and Chen are now at Central Saint Martins, one of UAL’s six colleges, and Serena gained a place on UAL Foundation. So here is what their offers took.
Yuxin turned a weak BTEC portfolio into a cohesive body of work and received five BA Fine Art offers and a place on UAL Foundation. She is now studying at Central Saint Martins, her first choice.
Chen transitioned from a career in finance to secure a place on his first-choice MA Fine Art programme at Central Saint Martins – without a Fine Art degree or foundation.
Serena transitioned from chef to fine art, gaining places at UAL Foundation and the Turps Studio Programme.
How Cadmium approaches UAL portfolio preparation
A strong application rarely comes from polishing a portfolio at the last minute. Instead, the real question is what needs to be developed, what needs to be removed, and what the work is actually trying to say.
UAL is six colleges: Central Saint Martins, Camberwell, Chelsea, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon. Each college reads a portfolio differently, and a Foundation, BA and MA application are each read in a different way. So we start with the college, the course and the route, then the work, and we prepare you for the specific college and course you are applying to. Support then ranges from a focused block of sessions to ongoing one-to-one mentorship across portfolio development, the written application and interview preparation.
Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before you submit.
Diagnose
First, we work out what is actually missing.
- Where is the current body of work strongest, and where is it thin?
- Is the problem production (not enough convincing work) or editing (enough work, but no clear structure or direction)?
- What is the strongest enquiry already running through the work?
The aim is not to force a theme onto the portfolio. Instead, it is to identify the direction that already has the most potential and make it visible.

Develop & Edit
Then we decide what needs to be made, developed, removed or foregrounded.
- We develop the projects that strengthen the central enquiry, rather than producing more work for the sake of volume.
- Process, research, experimentation and sketchbook material come forward whenever they reveal something important about how you think.
- After that, we edit and order the portfolio so the strongest ideas become clear. That includes the difficult decision to leave out good work when it weakens the application as a whole.
Articulate
Finally, we make the written and spoken application match the work.
- We strengthen the written components so they clarify the practice rather than simply describing it.
- We prepare you to speak about the work with confidence: why it was made, how it developed, what questions it raises and where the practice could go next.
In short, portfolio, written application and interview should feel like one coherent argument, not three separate exercises.
What a competitive UAL portfolio needs to communicate
UAL’s published portfolio guidance asks for process, research and development as well as finished outcomes. In our experience, four things separate a competitive UAL portfolio from a merely good body of work.
Development is visible
Portfolios edited down to finished outcomes alone often read as thinner than the applicant actually is. In fact, sketchbook pages, tests and even abandoned directions are evidence of how you think. So the judgement is which of them to bring forward, not whether to hide them.
The work is connected by an enquiry
A technically strong portfolio can still feel weak if the projects read as unrelated exercises. What makes it competitive is a line of enquiry the reader can follow across projects, even when the media change. Often that thread already exists in the strongest work. It needs to be found and edited around rather than manufactured.
Your decisions are legible
Why this piece, why this order, why that one was left out. Above all, a reader should sense that choices were made. Not every UAL course interviews every applicant, so in practice the order of the pages, and any notes that go with them, often have to speak for you. The difference between a good body of work and a strong application is frequently editing rather than more production.
The voice is your own
Applicants often shape a portfolio around what they imagine UAL wants to see, but tutors recognise it immediately. What reads as competitive is work driven by your own questions, materials and interests, presented with enough conviction to be argued for. In fact, imitating a house style is the quickest way to disappear in a strong field.
UAL application requirements by level
Foundation, BA and MA applications place different demands on the portfolio and the written application. Below is a concise overview of what matters at each level, as well as how Cadmium helps you prepare.
UAL Foundation Diploma
What the application involves
The Foundation route is the UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, a one-year course you apply for directly to UAL rather than through UCAS. Applications open in October.
If you meet the entry requirements, UAL asks for a digital portfolio of up to 25 pages on PebblePad, usually within about two weeks of applying: observational drawing, work in progress, annotations that explain your development, a range of methods and materials, and research that fed into the work.
A personal statement of up to 500 words: your reasons for choosing the course, your current creative practice, your plans, as well as any relevant experience.
You choose Diagnostic or Specialist mode when you apply: Diagnostic samples a range of pathways, Specialist commits to one curriculum area (3D Design, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art or Communication Design).
How Cadmium helps
Choose the right direction
First, we assess the work you already have, help you decide between Diagnostic and Specialist mode, and identify the pathway and portfolio direction with the strongest potential.
Develop the portfolio, not just the presentation
Then, where the work is too thin, too finished or too narrow, we set focused development priorities around observation, experimentation, research and process.
Bring the application together
We help you edit and structure the 25 pages, sharpen the annotations, and shape the 500-word statement so both communicate the same developing practice.

BA (Hons)
What the application involves
Apply through UCAS; for 2027 entry the deadline is 18:00 on 13 January 2027. Entry requirements are set by each course, and some courses expect a Foundation Diploma or an equivalent one-year course first.
Many practice-based UAL courses ask for a digital portfolio on PebblePad after you apply. The number of pages and what the portfolio should show are set by each course, so we work to the brief for your course.
The UCAS personal statement comes first: three set questions, 4,000 characters in total, and above all it must be your own work.
Depending on the course, you may be invited to an interview, and a small number of courses also set a written or video task. Not everyone is interviewed.
How Cadmium helps
Plan the route strategically
Where Foundation study forms part of the route into BA, we help plan the order and timing of the applications, so the portfolio is ready before the UCAS form goes in, not after the PebblePad email arrives.
Develop and edit around the strongest enquiry
We identify which projects carry the application, what still needs development and what should be removed. Then we check the pages against the criteria your chosen college and course publish. As a result, you see exactly where the gaps are.
Prepare the full application coherently
We develop the portfolio, any annotations, the UCAS statement and interview preparation together, so you present one consistent picture of your practice.

MA
What the application involves
Apply online directly to UAL. Last cycle UAL ran two application rounds, in early December and mid-March; the 2027/28 dates are not yet published. Course length varies by course.
Depending on the course, a digital portfolio on PebblePad and a video task of two to three minutes, usually requested after your initial application.
Usually a personal statement and a CV, and on some courses a study proposal or a written task. Each course sets its own list.
Some courses may invite you to an online interview.
How Cadmium helps
Sharpen the practice and its positioning
First, we identify the strongest ideas already present in the work and help develop them into a more coherent body of practice.
Edit the application into one argument
We refine the portfolio, the statement, the CV and any video, proposal or written task so they reinforce rather than contradict one another, and we read them against the criteria your chosen course publishes.
Prepare you to articulate the work
Finally, we help you discuss the practice critically and confidently: its influences, development, context and future direction, on camera and in the interview.

“Working with my tutor gave me the confidence to actually submit my application rather than endlessly questioning it. The tools and ways of thinking I learned during mentorship continued to be useful beyond that moment. The following year, I applied many of the same approaches when applying to the Turps Studio Programme, which was also successful. With my tutor’s support I was accepted onto the UAL Foundation course, which became the starting point for my transition into fine art practice.”

“I worked with my tutor throughout high school while developing my Visual Communication Design and Art folios, as well as during my university applications. Her feedback helped me strengthen the direction and creativity of my work, and she also supported me with my personal statement and an art analysis essay for UAL. With my tutor, I was able to articulate my interests in curation and art history much more clearly, and the Programme Leader for Curating at Goldsmiths even emailed me to say they were impressed by my personal statement. With her help, I received offers for Curating and History of Art at Goldsmiths, History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and Culture, Criticism and Curation at UAL. What I found more valuable was my tutor’s ability to help me clarify and communicate my ideas more confidently, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying for competitive art and humanities courses.”

“I worked with my tutor while preparing my portfolio for UK art school applications, including university of Edinburgh and UAL. Her feedback helped me clarify the direction of my work, identify which projects needed further development, and present my portfolio much more clearly for submission and interviews. I received offers from Edinburgh, UAL, Glasgow, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying to competitive art and design courses.”

The Slade (UCL)
“My tutor helped me with my Fine Art portfolio when I was applying to art school and she was honestly brilliant. I was looking at UAL, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and Slade, and she really helped me understand what these places are looking for. Before working with her I had a lot of work, but I didn’t really know how to put it together or what to leave out. My tutor helped me edit everything down, think about the order of the portfolio, show my research and development properly, and make the whole thing feel much clearer. She also gave me really good artist references that actually related to my work, not just random names. Her feedback was direct but very encouraging, and I felt much more confident afterwards. I’d really recommend my tutor to anyone applying for Fine Art, Foundation or art school courses. She knows the process properly and really cares about the work. I got into my first choice btw (Slade!) so very grateful”

Work That Felt Clearer, and Mine
“I worked with my tutor when I was applying for Fine Art after years in marketing, with a portfolio that was honestly a bit of a mess. I hadn’t made proper work since school and didn’t know what was useful, what was filler, or how to talk about any of it. She helped me apply to Camberwell, Chelsea, Goldsmiths and Glasgow. She was very good at cutting through the panic. We edited my sketchbooks, reordered the portfolio, rewrote my statement about ten times, and practised interviews without making me sound rehearsed. What I liked was that she didn’t give me fake confidence or try to make my work look like everyone else’s. She was direct when something wasn’t working, but always specific about why. By the end, my work felt much clearer and much more mine. I’d definitely recommend her! Outstanding art tutor for applications and everything else!”
