From an overwhelmed Foundation year to a first-choice Fine Art offer

The Slade does not require a Foundation year, but many applicants take one. Nawal’s is a good example of what that year can produce. So here is what it took.

Nawal

Portfolio & Admissions Mentorship

Nawal built her portfolio from scratch to secure a place on her first-choice BA Fine Art & Art History programme at Goldsmiths.

How Cadmium approaches a Slade School of Fine Art portfolio

The Slade School of Fine Art is part of UCL, and teaches Fine Art across three areas: Painting, Sculpture and Fine Art Media, with history and theory of art built into the degree. Its examiners assess a portfolio for critical awareness, depth and scope of investigation, relevant use of processes and materials, the ability to realise ideas, and the ability to establish a self-initiated programme of work.

For the BA, you apply through UCAS by 18:00 on 13 January 2027, and you are then invited to upload one portfolio: a single PDF of up to 20 pages, with up to two optional videos. Portfolios not sent in the specified format are not viewed, and shortlisted applicants are then invited to interview. So the portfolio has to make the case on its own before anyone meets you.

Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before the portfolio deadline, and again before the interview.

Diagnose

First, our Slade School of Fine Art portfolio preparation begins by assessing your work against the criteria the Slade publishes.

The aim is not to guess a formula. Instead, it is to find the strand of your work with the most depth and build the 20 pages around it.

90 minutes · online · £250

Develop & Edit

Then we develop the work and edit the portfolio PDF.

Articulate

Finally, we prepare you to talk about the work at interview.

In short, the portfolio and the interview should show the same practice: self-initiated, investigated in depth, and your own.

What Slade examiners are actually looking for

The Slade publishes its portfolio guidance and the criteria its examiners use, so what matters is unusually clear. In our experience, four things separate a Slade portfolio that gets shortlisted from one that does not.

A self-initiated programme of work

The Slade lists the ability to establish a self-initiated programme of work among its criteria, and says it looks for independence of thought, experimentation and in-depth investigations. In other words, a portfolio of set coursework, however strong, reads as compliance. Self-directed work, with visible ambition and risk, reads as an artist.

Critical awareness is assessed

Critical awareness is the first criterion the Slade lists, alongside the depth and scope of your investigation. It also says a portfolio needs to tell the story of your development so far, and show how you make work and what your processes are. As a result, knowing why the work looks the way it does matters as much as the work.

One portfolio, twenty pages

You may submit only one portfolio to the Slade: a single PDF of up to 20 pages, ideally one finished work per page and no more than three images per page, each captioned with title, date, size and materials. Two optional videos of up to five minutes can carry time-based work or sketchbook pages. Portfolios not sent in the specified format are not viewed.

Foundation is common, not required

The Slade says a Foundation course is not an entrance requirement, though many applicants take one, and portfolios from school leavers are held to the same standard. Above all, the Foundation year is where a lot of self-directed work gets made. For that year, see our Foundation portfolio preparation.

Slade School of Fine Art requirements by course

The BA, the MA and the MFA run on different routes, deadlines and criteria. Below is a concise overview of the published requirements, as well as how Cadmium helps at each stage.

BA Fine Art

What the application involves

UCAS

Apply by 18:00 on 13 January 2027; deferred entry is not normally considered. The BA is a four-year course.

Portfolio

After you apply, you are invited to upload one portfolio: a single PDF of up to 20 pages, plus up to two optional videos of up to five minutes each. The 2027 portfolio deadline is not yet published.

Entry

A Foundation course is not required. Grades are set out in the UCL prospectus, and mature applicants aged 21 or over are considered individually on their merits.

Selection

Critical awareness; depth and scope of investigation; relevant use of processes and materials; the ability to realise ideas; the ability to contribute to the course; and the ability to establish a self-initiated programme of work. Shortlisted applicants are invited to interview.

How Cadmium helps

Start well before January

First, we plan the self-directed work well before the UCAS deadline, so the portfolio is ready when the upload invitation arrives, rather than started then.

Edit the 20 pages to a voice

Then we select and sequence the 20 pages so the depth of your investigation and your own programme of work are visible, with the strongest work where an examiner will see it first.

Prepare for the interview

Finally, if you are shortlisted, we help you talk about the work clearly: its ideas, its processes and where it is going next.

What the application involves

Route

Apply online to UCL. Last cycle, applications closed on 6 January and portfolios were due on 12 January; the 2027 dates are not yet published.

Portfolio

Up to 20 pages, each image no larger than 5MB, plus a showreel of up to five minutes for time-based work and an optional video of sketchbook pages.

Statement

A supplementary personal statement with a study proposal: the projected nature of your study and research, and why the MA’s taught History and Theory of Art component matters to you.

Course and interview

24 months, practice-based, in Painting, Sculpture or Fine Art Media. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed; last cycle, interviews ran in late February on Microsoft Teams.

How Cadmium helps

Choose between the MA and the MFA

First, we help you decide which to apply for, because the Slade asks you to apply for one, not both, and the two differ in length and in their written components.

Write the proposal as a practice

Then we coach the statement so it explains the practice and the question driving it, in your own words, and what you would do with the time and the History and Theory component.

Edit the twenty for recency

Finally, we edit the twenty pages so they read as one current practice, not a retrospective.

Applying to the Slade MA? Start with a consultation.

We assess your practice, your statement and your timeline, then plan the application and the interview. For the interview itself, see our art school interview preparation.

What the application involves

Deadline

Apply online to UCL. Last cycle, applications closed on 6 January and portfolios were due on 12 January; the 2027 dates are not yet published. Late applications are not considered.

Portfolio

The same format as the MA: up to 20 pages, each image no larger than 5MB, a showreel of up to five minutes and an optional video of sketchbook pages.

Written work and references

A supplementary personal statement with a study proposal describing the projected nature of your study and research, plus one academic reference.

Interview and entry

Shortlisted applicants are interviewed. Applicants are normally graduates with a high level of achievement in their studio discipline. 18 months over two academic years, full time, with a written and oral Critical Studies component.

How Cadmium helps

Write the statement as a practice, not a CV

First, we coach the statement so it explains the practice and the question driving it, in your own words, and says why the Slade MFA is the right next step.

Curate the twenty pages

Then we edit the pages and the showreel for recency and coherence, because examiners are reading for a practice, not a retrospective. For the wider postgraduate picture, see our MA and MFA application support.

Prepare for the interview

Finally, we rehearse the interview with more than one interviewer, so the practice can be explained as clearly as it is shown.

Applying to the Slade MFA? Start with a consultation.

We assess your practice, your statement and your timeline, then recommend the right route: from a single Portfolio Review to longer-term mentorship.

Dates and criteria come from the Slade’s and UCL’s published pages, and they change by year. So we verify current requirements as part of your planning. All support is feedback and guidance on your own work; we do not make work or write statements on your behalf.

“My tutor helped me with my Fine Art portfolio when I was applying to art school and she was honestly brilliant. I was looking at UAL, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and Slade, and she really helped me understand what these places are looking for. Before working with her I had a lot of work, but I didn’t really know how to put it together or what to leave out. My tutor helped me edit everything down, think about the order of the portfolio, show my research and development properly, and make the whole thing feel much clearer. She also gave me really good artist references that actually related to my work, not just random names. Her feedback was direct but very encouraging, and I felt much more confident afterwards. I’d really recommend my tutor to anyone applying for Fine Art, Foundation or art school courses. She knows the process properly and really cares about the work. I got into my first choice btw (Slade!) so very grateful”

“My tutor was extremely helpful during my university application process, specifically regarding my personal statement and art portfolio. He provided structured guidance on brainstorming new artworks and offered practical advice on how to tailor my portfolio to meet the requirements of my chosen course. Throughout our sessions, he was patient and demonstrated a thorough understanding of the admissions process. He is an effective guidance counselor and teacher who provides clear, professional support. With his help, I got into all the courses that I have applied for, and I will be heading to UCL to pursue Art and Technology.”

Work That Felt Clearer, and Mine

Fine Art applications after a career in marketing

“I worked with my tutor when I was applying for Fine Art after years in marketing, with a portfolio that was honestly a bit of a mess. I hadn’t made proper work since school and didn’t know what was useful, what was filler, or how to talk about any of it. She helped me apply to Camberwell, Chelsea, Goldsmiths and Glasgow. She was very good at cutting through the panic. We edited my sketchbooks, reordered the portfolio, rewrote my statement about ten times, and practised interviews without making me sound rehearsed. What I liked was that she didn’t give me fake confidence or try to make my work look like everyone else’s. She was direct when something wasn’t working, but always specific about why. By the end, my work felt much clearer and much more mine. I’d definitely recommend her! Outstanding art tutor for applications and everything else!”

“Perfect! My tutor has a lot of experience, both as a teacher and as a professional artist and I have no doubt that she played a major role in helping my son get into one of the toughest art schools in the UK. She helped identify the weaker areas of his portfolio and helped him play to and develop his strengths. She was professional, personable and put my son at ease. Would recommend her to anyone.”

“I worked with my tutor throughout high school while developing my Visual Communication Design and Art folios, as well as during my university applications. Her feedback helped me strengthen the direction and creativity of my work, and she also supported me with my personal statement and an art analysis essay for UAL. With my tutor, I was able to articulate my interests in curation and art history much more clearly, and the Programme Leader for Curating at Goldsmiths even emailed me to say they were impressed by my personal statement. With her help, I received offers for Curating and History of Art at Goldsmiths, History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and Culture, Criticism and Curation at UAL. What I found more valuable was my tutor’s ability to help me clarify and communicate my ideas more confidently, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying for competitive art and humanities courses.”

“My tutor’s support was extremely helpful in preparing my BA Fine Art portfolio and interview. She looked at my work very carefully and helped me choose the strongest pieces for my portfolio, while also showing me how to explain the hidden ideas and layers behind my paintings more clearly. Her guidance made me feel much more confident in presenting my practice at interview, and I am sure it helped me communicate the essence of my work properly. I was very happy to receive a place on BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, and I am very grateful for her support.”
