Expert Leeds Arts University Fine Art Portfolio Preparation & Application Help
One-to-one Leeds Arts University portfolio preparation with practising artists, for the BA (Hons) Fine Art and the MA Fine Art: 10 to 15 examples of work, uploaded to the applicant portal within seven days of the request, and the UCAS application that comes first.
From an overwhelmed Foundation year to a first-choice Fine Art offer
Leeds Arts University asks to see idea development, a range of materials and final pieces. Nawal’s is a good example of what a focused Foundation year can produce. So here is what it took.
Nawal built her portfolio from scratch to secure a place on her first-choice BA Fine Art & Art History programme at Goldsmiths.
How Cadmium approaches a Leeds Arts University portfolio
Leeds Arts University gained university title in 2017; before that it was Leeds College of Art, and its alumni include Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Damien Hirst. Its BA (Hons) Fine Art runs over three years, or four with a placement year. You apply through UCAS, where the 2027 equal consideration date is 18:00 on 13 January 2027. If you meet, or could meet, the entry requirements, the university then asks for examples of your work through its applicant portal.
For Fine Art, that means 10 to 15 examples, uploaded within seven days. The university wants idea development, a range of materials and processes, and final pieces, and says that at this stage it likes to see experimental, innovative drawing and developmental work as well as finished work. So a Leeds Arts University portfolio has to be ready before the request arrives.
Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before 13 January, and again before the upload.
Diagnose
First, our Leeds Arts University portfolio preparation begins by assessing your work against the Fine Art guidance the university publishes.
- Does the portfolio show idea development, and not only finished pieces?
- Is there experimental, innovative drawing, and a range of materials and processes?
- Is the route right? The conditional offer is 104 to 120 UCAS tariff points, with GCSE English at 4 or C.
The aim is not to show everything, but to choose 10 to 15 examples that cover development, materials and outcomes, and show how you think.

Develop & Edit
Then we develop the work and edit the selection, example by example.
- First, we push the self-directed strand of your work further, with drawing and experiment at its core.
- Then we select 10 to 15 examples that cover development, materials and processes, and final pieces.
- After that, we prepare the files for the applicant portal, each under 80MB, so the seven days are for checking.
Articulate
Finally, we help you explain the ideas behind the work, in your personal statement and in the work itself.
- We help you say what each piece explores, how it was made and what came next, in your own words.
- In addition, we make sure the personal statement and the portfolio point to the same interests, so the application reads as one practice.
In short, drawing, development and finished pieces should read as one practice.
What Leeds Arts University is actually looking for in a Fine Art portfolio
Leeds Arts University publishes portfolio guidance for Fine Art, and most applicants never read it. In our experience, four things separate a Leeds Arts University portfolio that stands out from one that does not.
Development, not only outcomes
The guidance asks for examples of idea development alongside final pieces. In other words, the pages that show how a piece came about are as much a part of the portfolio as the piece itself. A sketchbook spread can earn its place as fully as a finished work.
Drawing that experiments
The university says that at this stage it likes to see experimental, innovative drawing and developmental work as well as finished work. So drawing should take risks, and it should feed the rest of the portfolio rather than sit apart from it.
A range of materials and processes
Leeds Arts University also asks for examples of a range of materials and processes. As a result, 10 to 15 examples have to show breadth without losing the thread, which makes the selection an edit, not a collection.
Seven days to upload
Once the university asks for your portfolio, you have seven days to upload it to the applicant portal, with each file no larger than 80MB, and photographic work containing nudity cannot be accepted. So the selection needs to be finished before you apply, not after. For a fuller walkthrough, see our guide to preparing a portfolio for UK art schools.
Leeds Arts University Fine Art requirements by course
Leeds Arts University’s BA and MA differ in who can apply and what you submit. Below is a concise overview of the published requirements, as well as how Cadmium helps at each stage.
BA (Hons) Fine Art
What the application involves
Apply through UCAS, institution code L28: W100 for three years or W101 with a placement year. The 2027 equal consideration date is 18:00 on 13 January 2027.
10 to 15 examples of work, uploaded to the applicant portal within seven days of the request, each file no larger than 80MB.
A conditional offer of 104 to 120 UCAS tariff points from A Levels, T Levels, Extended Diplomas or Foundation Diplomas, and GCSE English at 4 or C.
Idea development, a range of materials and processes, and final pieces, with experimental drawing and developmental work alongside finished work.
How Cadmium helps
Plan the 15 examples
First, we map your work against the three things the guidance asks for, so you know where the gaps are before you apply.
Finish before the request
Then we select and order the examples before the UCAS deadline, so the seven days after the request are for checking, not making.
Check the files
Finally, we check every file against the 80MB limit and the university’s guidance, so nothing technical gets in the way.

MA Fine Art
What the application involves
One year full time or two years part time, at Leeds Arts University.
Between 10 and 15 pieces of work, each file no larger than 80MB, with a personal statement and one reference.
A 2:2 UK honours degree or international equivalent, or a degree-equivalent postgraduate diploma or professional qualification.
A degree in another discipline, or experience in lieu of a degree, may be considered through Recognition of Prior Learning.
How Cadmium helps
Edit to 15 pieces
First, we choose the 10 to 15 pieces so they show where your practice is now, and where it is heading.
Write the statement
Then we coach the personal statement so it explains your practice and why the MA is the right next step, in your own words.
Choose full or part time
Finally, we talk through one year full time against two years part time, so the application fits how you work.

Requirements and codes come from Leeds Arts University’s published pages, and the 2027 date is UCAS’s equal consideration deadline, as the university’s own page still shows 2026 dates. So we verify current requirements as part of your planning. All support is feedback and guidance on your own work; we do not make work or write statements on your behalf.

“My tutor helped me with my Fine Art portfolio when I was applying to art school and she was honestly brilliant. I was looking at UAL, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and Slade, and she really helped me understand

what these places are looking for. Before working with her I had a lot of work, but I didn’t really know how to put it together or what to leave out. My tutor helped me edit everything down, think about the order of the portfolio, show my research and development properly, and make the whole thing feel much clearer. She also gave me really good artist references that actually related to my work, not just random names. Her feedback was direct but very encouraging, and I felt much more confident afterwards. I’d really recommend my tutor to anyone applying for Fine Art, Foundation or art school courses. She knows the process properly and really cares about the work. I got into my first choice btw (Slade!) so very grateful”

also supported me with my personal statement and an art analysis essay for UAL. With my tutor, I was able to articulate my interests in curation and art history much more clearly, and the Programme Leader for Curating at Goldsmiths even emailed me to say they were impressed by my personal statement. With her help, I received offers for Curating and History of Art at Goldsmiths, History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and Culture, Criticism and Curation at UAL. What I found more valuable was my tutor’s ability to help me clarify and communicate my ideas more confidently, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying for competitive art and humanities courses.”
