From an overwhelmed Foundation year to a first-choice Fine Art offer

ECA assesses research, development, selection and context, not finished pieces alone. Nawal’s is a good example of what a focused Foundation year can produce. So here is what it took.

Portfolio & Admissions Mentorship

Nawal built her portfolio from scratch to secure a place on her first-choice BA Fine Art & Art History programme at Goldsmiths.

How Cadmium approaches an Edinburgh College of Art portfolio

Edinburgh College of Art’s BA (Hons) Fine Art is a four-year, studio-based degree at the Lauriston campus, with second-year entry available. You apply through UCAS by 18:00 on 13 January 2027, then upload a portfolio through a separate system between 1 December 2026 and midday on 27 January 2027. If the portfolio is not submitted by the deadline, the application is unsuccessful.

The portfolio is one PDF of up to 20 pages, with a maximum of five pages for each of four assessment criteria: visual research and enquiry, idea development, selection and resolution, and contextual awareness. So an Edinburgh College of Art portfolio is not a gallery of finished work. It is an argument in four parts, with short text that shows your thinking.

Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before 13 January, and again before 27 January.

Diagnose

First, our Edinburgh College of Art portfolio preparation begins by assessing your work against ECA’s four published criteria.

The aim is not to fill 20 pages, but to make each of the four sections strong. ECA says it does not expect a fully formed artist or a particular technical aptitude, so we build around the work that shows your enquiry most clearly.

Develop & Edit

Then we develop the work and edit the PDF, section by section.

Articulate

Finally, we help you write the short texts that show your process, critical thinking and reflection.

In short, the research, the development, the outcomes and the context should read as one practice.

What ECA is actually looking for in a Fine Art portfolio

ECA publishes exactly how it assesses a Fine Art portfolio, and most applicants never read it. In our experience, four things separate an Edinburgh College of Art portfolio that stands out from one that does not.

Five pages of research

The first criterion is visual research and enquiry: what you have looked at, how you examined it and how it shaped your work. So sketchbook and notebook pages, photographs and drawings belong at the start. In other words, research is a section of the portfolio, not a prelude to it.

Development, including what did not work

ECA asks which materials, ideas and techniques you experimented with, what worked and what did not, and what you learned. As a result, tests, maquettes, storyboards and abandoned attempts are evidence, as long as the choices that followed are clear.

Selection is a skill they mark

The third criterion is critical judgement, selection and resolution: your ability to self-edit and curate a coherent selection of works. Final outcomes should be documented well lit and in high resolution. So the edit itself is assessed, not just the work.

Context, made personal

The last five pages show contextual and professional awareness: exhibitions you have seen, articles you have read, artists working in similar media or with similar themes, and how they relate to your own idea of what art can be. For a fuller walkthrough, see our Edinburgh College of Art Fine Art portfolio guide.

Edinburgh College of Art Fine Art requirements by course

ECA’s BA and MA run on different routes, deadlines and criteria. Below is a concise overview of the published requirements, as well as how Cadmium helps at each stage.

BA (Hons) Fine Art

What the application involves

UCAS

Apply by 18:00 on 13 January 2027. Four years, full time, at the Lauriston campus; second-year entry is available.

Portfolio

One PDF of up to 20 pages, five per criterion, up to 50MB, uploaded through a separate system between 1 December 2026 and midday on 27 January 2027.

Offer

ABB at A level with GCSE English at C or 4, or ABBB in Highers by the end of S5; no specific subjects required. IELTS Academic 6.5, at least 5.5 in each component.

Selection

Four criteria: visual research and enquiry, idea development, selection and resolution, and contextual awareness. Decisions by 7 May 2027 at the latest.

How Cadmium helps

Plan the four sections

First, we map your work against the four criteria, so you know which section needs the most work before December.

Build the 20 pages before January

Then we select and order the pages, with their short texts, so the upload window is for checking, not making.

Check the file before it goes

Finally, we check the page count, the file size and the file name ECA asks for, so nothing technical stands between ECA and the work.

Applying to ECA this year? Start with a consultation.

We assess where your work is against ECA’s four criteria, and then give you a tailored plan to 27 January.

What the application involves

Deadline

For 2026 entry, ECA ran two rounds, the first closing on 15 December 2025. Applications for the next intake usually open in October.

Portfolio

One A4 PDF of no more than 10 pages, with captions, an artist statement of up to 250 words and no more than five links.

Entry

A UK 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject, or relevant professional experience. IELTS Academic 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component.

Study

One year full time or two years part time, at the Lauriston campus. A reference is not normally needed when you apply.

How Cadmium helps

Edit to ten pages

First, we choose the work for ten pages, so your range of approaches is clear without crowding any page.

Write the 250 words

Then we coach the artist statement so it explains your practice and its questions, in your own words.

Show how you work with others

Finally, we bring out evidence of collaborative and independent practice, which ECA asks the application and portfolio to demonstrate.

We assess where your practice is, and then give you a tailored plan for the portfolio and statement.

BA dates, requirements and criteria come from the University of Edinburgh’s published pages for 2027 entry. MA details come from its 2026-27 pages, and 2027-28 requirements may differ. So we verify current requirements as part of your planning. All support is feedback and guidance on your own work; we do not make work or write statements on your behalf.

“My tutor helped me with my Fine Art portfolio when I was applying to art school and she was honestly brilliant. I was looking at UAL, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and Slade, and she really helped me understand

what these places are looking for. Before working with her I had a lot of work, but I didn’t really know how to put it together or what to leave out. My tutor helped me edit everything down, think about the order of the portfolio, show my research and development properly, and make the whole thing feel much clearer. She also gave me really good artist references that actually related to my work, not just random names. Her feedback was direct but very encouraging, and I felt much more confident afterwards. I’d really recommend my tutor to anyone applying for Fine Art, Foundation or art school courses. She knows the process properly and really cares about the work. I got into my first choice btw (Slade!) so very grateful”

also supported me with my personal statement and an art analysis essay for UAL. With my tutor, I was able to articulate my interests in curation and art history much more clearly, and the Programme Leader for Curating at Goldsmiths even emailed me to say they were impressed by my personal statement. With her help, I received offers for Curating and History of Art at Goldsmiths, History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and Culture, Criticism and Curation at UAL. What I found more valuable was my tutor’s ability to help me clarify and communicate my ideas more confidently, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying for competitive art and humanities courses.”
