Portfolio & Admissions Mentorship
Pratt Institute Portfolio Preparation
One-to-one Pratt portfolio preparation for the BFA and MFA routes in Brooklyn. You work with practising artists, and the plan is built around what Pratt publishes it selects on: fully resolved work with real observational drawing.
Why the US route is different
Applying to Pratt works differently from the UK. You apply through the Common Application, then upload your portfolio through Pratt’s own applicant portal. Pratt asks for finished work with range, and specifically for observational drawing from three-dimensional objects. The deadlines fall earlier, from a November Early Action round. We prepare you for the system as well as the school.
How Cadmium approaches Pratt portfolio preparation
A strong application rarely comes from polishing a portfolio at the last minute. Instead, the real question is what needs to be developed, what needs to be removed, and what the work is actually trying to say.
Pratt reads a BFA application and an MFA application differently, so we start with the route, then the work. Support ranges from a focused block of sessions to ongoing one-to-one mentorship across portfolio development, the written application and interview preparation.
Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before you submit.
Diagnose
First, we work out what is actually missing.
- Where is the current body of work strongest, and where is it thin?
- Is the problem production (not enough convincing work) or editing (enough work, but no clear structure or direction)?
- What is the strongest enquiry already running through the work?
The aim is not to force a theme onto the portfolio. Instead, it is to identify the direction that already has the most potential and make it visible.

Develop & Edit
Then we decide what needs to be made, developed, removed or foregrounded.
- We develop the projects that strengthen the central enquiry, rather than producing more work for the sake of volume.
- Process, research, experimentation and sketchbook material come forward whenever they reveal something important about how you think.
- After that, we edit and order the portfolio so the strongest ideas become clear. That includes the difficult decision to leave out good work when it weakens the application as a whole.
Articulate
Finally, we make the written and spoken application match the work.
- We strengthen the written components so they clarify the practice rather than simply describing it.
- We prepare you to speak about the work with confidence: why it was made, how it developed, what questions it raises and where the practice could go next.
In short, portfolio, written application and interview should feel like one coherent argument, not three separate exercises.
What a competitive Pratt portfolio needs to communicate
Pratt asks for finished work with range, grounded in real observational drawing. In our experience, four things separate a competitive Pratt portfolio from a merely good body of work.
Development is visible
Portfolios edited down to finished outcomes alone often read as thinner than the applicant actually is. In fact, sketchbook pages, tests and even abandoned directions are evidence of how you think. So the judgement is which of them to bring forward, not whether to hide them.
The work is connected by an enquiry
A technically strong portfolio can still feel weak if the projects read as unrelated exercises. What makes it competitive is a line of enquiry the reader can follow across projects, even when the media change. Often that thread already exists in the strongest work. It needs to be found and edited around rather than manufactured.
Observation is there
Pratt asks for three to five pieces made from direct observation of three-dimensional objects. Real observational drawing is the backbone of a competitive Pratt portfolio.
The voice is your own
Applicants often shape a portfolio around what they imagine Pratt wants to see, but tutors recognise it immediately. What reads as competitive is work driven by your own questions, materials and interests, presented with enough conviction to be argued for. Imitating a house style is the quickest way to disappear in a strong field.
Pratt application requirements by level
Pratt’s BFA and MFA applications place different demands on the portfolio and the written application. Below is a concise overview of what matters at each level, and how Cadmium helps you prepare.
BFA (First-Year)
What the application involves
Pratt runs BFA programmes across its Schools of Art and Design, with a shared first-year Foundation. Apply through the Common App, then finish your account and upload the portfolio through Pratt's portal.
10 to 20 artworks including three to five pieces from direct observation of three-dimensional objects; finished work with range across colour, mixed media and three-dimensional studies; work from the last 18 months.
The Pratt Essay, 250 to 500 words (the Common App essay is optional).
Test-optional. Early Action 15 November, Priority Decision 15 January, then rolling. English: TOEFL 92 (new scale 5), IELTS 7.0, Duolingo 125, PTE 62, Cambridge 183.
How Cadmium helps
Choose the right direction
First, we assess the work you already have, identify the major and direction it points toward, and pick the strongest pieces to build the portfolio around.
Develop the portfolio, not just the presentation
Then, where the work is too thin, too finished or too narrow, we set focused development priorities around observation, experimentation, research and process.
Bring the application together
We help you edit and order the portfolio, strengthen the observational work, and shape the Pratt Essay so the whole application reads as one developing practice.

MFA (Graduate)
What the application involves
Departmental MFA programmes (Fine Arts, Photography, Communications Design and others) via Pratt's graduate application, with requirements set by department.
Programme-specific.
A statement of purpose, up to 500 words unless the department differs.
5 January priority for Fall. English minimums as above.
How Cadmium helps
Plan the route strategically
We help you time the application and choose which programme and body of work to lead with, so the portfolio and statement are ready and aligned well before the deadline.
Develop and edit around the strongest enquiry
We work out which projects carry your application, what still needs development and what to cut, and measure the work against what Pratt looks for. You end up seeing exactly where the gaps are.
Prepare the full application coherently
We develop the portfolio and the statement of purpose together, so the whole application presents one consistent picture of your practice.

A Portfolio That Came Together
“I worked with my tutor on my portfolio while applying to US art schools (including RISD and CalArts), and she was honestly a huge help. I had work already, but it wasn’t really coming together as a portfolio, and I didn’t fully understand what schools were actually looking for. She’s very straightforward in a good way… she’ll tell you what’s working and what isn’t, but it never feels harsh or generic. It felt like she really understood my work and where I could take it, rather than trying to fit it into a formula. We spent time refining my strongest pieces, cutting things that weren’t needed, and thinking about how everything sat together as a whole. She also helped a lot with how to talk about the work, which I was struggling with before. I came away feeling a lot clearer and more confident about my portfolio and applications. I’d definitely recommend her if you’re serious about applying to art school.”

“My tutor completely changed how I approached my art school application. I came in with a scattered portfolio and zero clue how to talk about my work. She helped me shape everything, from sketchbook pages to my personal statement, and helped made it feel like me instead of just ticking boxes. She’s honest, sharp, and actually cares. I got into my first-choice schools (Goldsmiths and Cal Arts) and felt confident going into the interview, which I never thought would happen. If you’re applying to art school or university in general, just book her.”

A Completely Different Experience
“I came to my tutor after feeling quite disappointed with portfolio tutoring and studio-based guidance in Asia, where I struggled to find critical depth or clear direction. Working with my tutor has been a completely different experience. From the very first trial session, she demonstrated an exceptional ability to read my work and identify its underlying direction. She suggested artists and references that were not generic, but highly specific and deeply relevant to my practice, which immediately helped me see my work more clearly. Throughout our sessions, my tutor guided me through the process of refining my portfolio with the level of rigour. Coming from a nontraditional art background and without formal art school training, I found her approach both patient and intellectually demanding in the best way. She asks precise questions, challenges assumptions, and helps articulate ideas without imposing her own voice. Beyond portfolio preparation for applications, she has helped me develop a stronger artistic awareness and confidence in how I think, speak, and position my work. I truly feel that working with my tutor has prepared me not only for applications, but for the mindset and critical environment of art school itself.”
