From an overwhelmed Foundation year to a first-choice Fine Art offer

Falmouth interviews Fine Art applicants about the work and the ideas behind it. Nawal’s is a good example of what a focused Foundation year can produce. So here is what it took.

Nawal

Portfolio & Admissions Mentorship

Nawal built her portfolio from scratch to secure a place on her first-choice BA Fine Art & Art History programme at Goldsmiths.

How Cadmium approaches a Falmouth Fine Art portfolio

Falmouth’s Fine Art BA(Hons) runs at the Falmouth Campus over three years, or four with an Integrated Foundation Year or a professional placement. You apply through UCAS by 13 January 2027 for equal consideration. Then comes an interview with a member of the course team, in person or online, where you talk through your portfolio.

Falmouth asks for a minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points, and it also welcomes applicants who can demonstrate their potential through an exceptional portfolio. So at Falmouth, the portfolio and how you talk about it carry real weight. Its advice is to aim for 10 to 20 pieces, and to put quality before quantity.

Every applicant begins with a diagnosis. From there, we build the support around what will make the biggest difference before 13 January, and again before the interview.

Diagnose

First, our Falmouth Fine Art portfolio preparation begins by assessing your work against what Falmouth says it will discuss at interview.

The aim is to choose 10 to 20 pieces you can talk about with conviction: how each one was made, and the ideas and artists behind it.

90 minutes · online · £250

Develop & Edit

Then we develop the work and edit the portfolio, piece by piece.

Articulate

Finally, we prepare you for the interview with a member of the course team.

In short, the portfolio and the conversation about it should show the same curiosity, and the same contexts.

What Falmouth is actually looking for in a Fine Art portfolio

Falmouth publishes what it wants to discuss at a Fine Art interview, and most applicants never read it. In our experience, four things separate a Falmouth Fine Art portfolio that stands out from one that does not.

Work you can explain

At interview, Falmouth wants to discuss the work in your portfolio, how it is made and the ideas and artists’ work that informed it. In other words, every piece should come with a story about process. A strong piece you cannot explain does less than a modest one you can.

Context and exhibitions

Falmouth also asks about the critical contexts of your interests, the artists and ideas that motivate you, and the art you have seen in exhibitions. So notes and sketches from galleries belong in the portfolio, and the habit of looking belongs in your week.

Quality, not quantity

Falmouth’s portfolio advice suggests aiming for 10 to 20 pieces, from preliminary sketches and observational drawings to finished outcomes, and says quality matters more than quantity. As a result, the edit is about choosing the pieces that start the best conversation.

Grades are not the only route

The three-year degree asks for a minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points, and Falmouth also welcomes applicants who can demonstrate their potential through an exceptional portfolio. If you do not have a suitable portfolio, you can answer one of the Falmouth Creative Projects instead. For a fuller walkthrough, see our Falmouth Fine Art portfolio guide.

Falmouth Fine Art requirements by course

Falmouth’s BA and MA differ in who can apply, what you submit and when. Below is a concise overview of the published requirements, as well as how Cadmium helps at each stage.

Fine Art BA(Hons)

What the application involves

UCAS

Apply by 13 January 2027 for equal consideration: W100 for three years, FY11 with an Integrated Foundation Year or PY19 with a professional placement.

Portfolio

Aim for 10 to 20 pieces. Bring the portfolio to an in-person interview, or send one online link through the Applicant Portal for an online interview.

Offer

A minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points, or 32 with the Integrated Foundation Year, and GCSE English Language at 4 (C). IELTS Academic 6.0, at least 5.5 in each skill.

Selection

An interview of up to 30 minutes with a member of the course team, in Cornwall, at a regional interview just outside London, or online.

How Cadmium helps

Choose the route first

First, we look at your qualifications and work, and whether the three-year degree, the Integrated Foundation Year or the placement route fits best.

Edit to 10 to 20 pieces

Then we select the pieces you can talk about best, with sketchbooks and work in progress alongside finished outcomes.

Rehearse the conversation

Finally, we run mock interviews on the work, its contexts and your reasons for choosing Falmouth.

What the application involves

Deadline

Falmouth has yet to publish application details for September 2027 on the course page. One year, full time, at the Falmouth Campus.

Portfolio

Examples of a current project or practice, or an ongoing research project, presented for your specialism: painting, sculpture, photography, film or sound.

Entry

A relevant Level 6 qualification or equivalent experience, and a demonstrable interest in the subject. Prior learning can also count.

English

IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in Speaking and at least 5.5 in Reading, Writing and Listening.

How Cadmium helps

Lead with a current project

First, we build the portfolio around a current project or line of research, so it shows where the practice is going.

Present it for your specialism

Then we decide how to present the work, from images of paintings or sculpture to film or sound recordings, so it reads clearly.

Plan the year

Finally, we look at how a one-year MA fits your practice, and what you want to have made by the end of it.

Requirements, codes and dates come from Falmouth University’s published pages for 2027 entry, and MA application dates for 2027 are still to be confirmed. So we verify current requirements as part of your planning. All support is feedback and guidance on your own work; we do not make work or write statements on your behalf.

“My tutor helped me with my Fine Art portfolio when I was applying to art school and she was honestly brilliant. I was looking at UAL, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and Slade, and she really helped me understand

what these places are looking for. Before working with her I had a lot of work, but I didn’t really know how to put it together or what to leave out. My tutor helped me edit everything down, think about the order of the portfolio, show my research and development properly, and make the whole thing feel much clearer. She also gave me really good artist references that actually related to my work, not just random names. Her feedback was direct but very encouraging, and I felt much more confident afterwards. I’d really recommend my tutor to anyone applying for Fine Art, Foundation or art school courses. She knows the process properly and really cares about the work. I got into my first choice btw (Slade!) so very grateful”

also supported me with my personal statement and an art analysis essay for UAL. With my tutor, I was able to articulate my interests in curation and art history much more clearly, and the Programme Leader for Curating at Goldsmiths even emailed me to say they were impressed by my personal statement. With her help, I received offers for Curating and History of Art at Goldsmiths, History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and Culture, Criticism and Curation at UAL. What I found more valuable was my tutor’s ability to help me clarify and communicate my ideas more confidently, and I’d definitely recommend my tutor to students applying for competitive art and humanities courses.”
